As a teacher and writer, Jay O'Callahan decided to explore the use of sound, rhythm and movement. Then he began telling his stories touring the United States as well as performing in Europe and Africa. Jay has been creating and performing stories now for over 30 years. He lives with his wife in Massachusetts. Time magazine called him "a genius among storytellers... O'Callahan who believes that storytelling is a kind of music, with the storyteller as the instrument, has advised...'Be brave enough to use silence'." "A virtuoso," echoed the Boston Globe. "He can turn a word into a thousand pictures." According to The Sun of Lowell, MA: "Jay O'Callahan introduces us to characters who put us back in touch with what is really important. His people are full of wonder and courage and common sense." A Weekend Workshop: Creativity and Bringing Characters Alive May 6-8, 2011
Friday: 7 — 9 P.M. 8 Stratford Place, Monterey, CA
Limited to 14
Reservations or information: Jay O'Callahan crafts the details of ordinary life into extraordinary stories containing deep spiritual wisdom. There are no gimmicks or clever tricks opting for the quick response so often found in today's entertainment. Rather, with artist's imagination and attention to authentic detail, he brings to life his personal perception of experience in telling the unfolding story. Then, combining his intimacy with the audience's deeper experience, participants discover their own stories. Jay will draw out characters from your memory. He will show how he finds a gesture, a moment, a phrase or an image which swiftly tells the truth of a character. The workshop will be a time to bring characters truly alive. Jay will tell some short stories and use his "sparks" to draw out memories. Jay says:
In this Creativity and Bringing Characters Alive Workshop, I'll show you how I find a gesture, a moment, a phrase or an image which swiftly tells the truth of a character. The workshop will be a time to bring characters truly alive. I'll tell some short stories and use what I call 'sparks' to draw out memories. During the weekend, you'll discover seeds of stories, we'll water them, feel their growth and you'll return home with 'tools' to nurture them. It will be a time for reflection and a time to 'grow' your own creativity!" Checks are held until one month before the event. Afterwards, refunds with a $20 handling fee are only made when a replacement is found.
